Hi Ddave,

Got your letter about favorite podcasts. That is a very tough question, but I'd have to say the podcast that I always look for is The Best of the Left. Every three days, Jay Tomlinson aggregates the best of the progressive media. He's always on schedule and always has clips that are funny, make you think or inform you about something you might have missed in the media. It's the podcast for politics junkies packed with trenchant commentary, sometimes from unexpected places. More unusual, each show has a theme, so you get pretty deep into the topic from all sides, whether it be NDAA, Occupy, congressional follies or deconstructing war propaganda. It's not your average clip show.

Thanks for posting this Dave. I had a note to look it up and found more here than I expected. It seems like budgeting two minutes for an intro is long. We will have to test different versions to see what we think works best for us.

My favorite comedy show of the year was 'Hollywood Babylon' from the Smodcast network. For religion I really liked the 'Something Beautiful Podcast.' Politics wise I loved the 'It's all politics' show from PBS. This dude named Dave Jackson has my favorite podcast about podcasting.

You would need to put a "new rss" tag into the rss feed. Being that this comes from blog talk radio, and being that they know what that "new rss" tag would move you away from them, I doubt it. That's why I use feedburner and submit my feedburner feed to iTunes. Then if I want to change something, I pupdate feedburner which updates iTunes.

Sad to see another podcast service go the way of the dinosaur. That is one of the reasons why I feel I must "own" my own content. Even when using free services like BlogTalkRadio or Cinch, I am religious about downloading the audio content. Lesson learned from watching Uttterli aka Utterz go bust suddenly.

I didn't think MyPodcast.com would be around much longer.

Updating the links is actually a much easier and quicker process than many would think. PowerPress has a built-in find-and-replace function designed for replacing old enclosures with new paths.

Or if someone isn't using PowerPress, they could use MySQL to run a find-and-replace. However, while this is "simple," it has more steps and can easily be intimidating since editing MySQL databases is beyond most podcasters' experience.

It seems a bit harsh to say that all podfade occurs because of diminished passion.

There are other considerations that can cause podfade:
Changes in financial situation - can't afford internet, hosting, had to sell equipment, etc.
New child, new/extra job - Less time for a hobby even if you are passionate

For me, it was moving to another country where we only had electricity for ~4hrs a day and very unreliable internet. Sometimes the passion is still there, but new physical hurdles still cause podfade.

I know mine is an extreme example, but I'm sure there are others like myself who don't appreciate the implication that we quit because we didn't have enough passion.

I also realize that most of these obstacles can be overcome with increased passion, but it's not to say someone's passion is on a down-hill slope just because they have new commitments.

Thanks for this on your show (I think I heard you mention this) and here on the blog. I think I heard the very podcast you are referring to, and since I have lots of respect for the hosts, I was quite surprised.

Don't get me wrong, I can sort of understand where they were coming from, as they referenced still *another* podcast from an even bigger podcaster for whom many of us have a lot of respect (hint: he has said podcasting is dead many times, yet also has admitted that 80% of his almost 2 million dollar annual income still comes from his subscription based audio programs, i.e. Podcasts! The wise ones will know to whom I refer). On those shows, they do sometimes go on for a long time on the Audible promos.

However, they are informative, since they are giving their Audible "Picks of the Week", which aside from the promo aspect, has value as content all by itself.

And then of course, there are the points you have already made so well: we are offering people audio content (in many of our cases). Audible is a premium audio content provider. It is a no-brainer match, and saying it is over-used, is like saying that your car is over used, if it gets you where you are going and you need to go there.

If someone wants to skip ahead, fine. But I really, really love Audible and use their services a lot. They still have hundreds of books in my library in my Audible account and I have not been a paid subscriber for years. My Dad also has an Audible account and he shares his books with me. This is an awesome service and I would be proud to have them as a sponsor and for me, it is providing listeners with a service. In other words, I would be doing it for free anyway, since so much of what I do, is turning people onto great services and other providers of content. Why not get paid for something I would promote anyway?

Thanks again for the 1,2,3 of this and for saying something that, IMHO, needed to be said.
Rabbi Steve

There's also this bunch of junk out there on the webstack called ThePodcastGuy.com

I wouldn't bother, though. It's entirely unoriginal fare matched with a talent who defies his status.

I suppose it's the best Europe has to offer, though.

Dave, I've been using Headway for what seems like a lifetime - in fact, one of my earlier reviews of the theme (though I loathe to use that term; it sounds so rigid. Yet Headway is much more than a framework in the user interface, features, etc) appears here:

http://website-in-a-weekend.net/website-design/headway/

It is as you say, a golden egg among WordPress themes. I built my site on it - www.thepodcastguy.com - and I'm no designer at all.

I believe that a big revamp impending that will make Headway even more incredible - and easier to use, if that's possible.

Clay, Grant, AJ, Chris and the team have done monumental things in making WordPress yet more accessible. Kudos, all, and great work Dave for bringing Headway to the world's attention.

Very cool Dave. It seems like a hybrid between Wordpress and Squarespace. Great for a designer that doesn't want to learn css.

I wish to show my appreciation to the writer just for bailing me out of such a circumstance. After looking out through the world-wide-web and seeing basics that were not pleasant, I believed my life was well over. Living without the answers to the issues you have solved by way of your guideline is a critical case, and those which might have in a wrong way damaged my entire career if I had not discovered your web site. Your primary mastery and kindness in controlling every item was very helpful. I am not sure what I would have done if I had not come across such a point like this. I am able to at this time look ahead to my future. Thank you very much for your professional and effective help. I will not think twice to recommend your web sites to any individual who wants and needs care about this matter.

Thanks to Dave Thackeray, I was introduced to Hindenburg this past summer. I was able to download the NGO Version, a very stripped down version of the Hindenburg Journalist program. Even with that, I am very impressed with the quality and the ease of use of the program. I record my shows now using Hindenburg and Levelator and I am pleased with the sound quality that I get. (As with anyone, I know that I still have MUCH to learn and I am very much looking forward to learning it.) Being a school teacher (read: MINIMAL budget) and a father of FOUR girls (read: INSANITY), I cannot afford to spend the $100 to upgrade yet, but as my listenership grows, I will do that.

Thanks for all that you do for podcasting and the people that are trying to get their passion off the ground.

Karin,
Great to hear form you. I saw that feature. I'd rather run it through feedburner, or something web based (personal preference). the guys seem great, and really keep up with what people are saying about their software. Before the ink had dried on this review, I had a tweet and some help with the effects issues (resolved).

Hi Dave - I have been beta-testing new features in Hindenburg Journalist Pro here in Denmark where the developers are origined, and I must say I am impressed too.

I can add a few very important features (there are many)

1. When you tag your mp3-files before publishing ALL tags are included, you don´t have to use eg. MP3-tag software to include image for Windows Media Player

2. You can create a podcast feed and upload throug ftp in just one click - we do that for European Podcast Award - and the feed in completely valid :-) http://blog.european-podcast-award.eu/episode-1-of-the-official-epa-podcast-about-the-award-602

3. And one of the new features I am testing right now is - Skype recording - I have been using Callburner and Pamela, but have not been happy with the audio quality - Hindenburg creates better audio - AND you can follow the waveforms of both sides of your call while recording - I just can´t wait to see the reactions on this new feature from podcasters.
